No injuries reported in car-train accident

No injuries were reported in the aftermath of an accident involving a passenger car and freight train.

The accident happened at about 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at a railroad crossing at Wolf Lake.

The crossing is on the State Forest Road, about 100 feet east of Illinois Route 3.

Illinois State Police at Ullin reported that the accident involved a 1996 Honda Prelude.

State police reported that the car crossed the railroad tracks and hit a southbound train.

State police reported that the Union Pacific train was traveling south as the car approached the crossing from the east.

The car struck the train and damaged a ladder. The  car could not be driven after the accident and was taken from the scene.

The driver of the car was identified by state police as Douglas W. Mezo, 17, of Wolf Lake.

Another 17-year-old male and a 12-year-old male were reported to have been a passenger in the car when the accident happened.

State police said that the driver  of the car was cited for disobeying a railroad signal and improper lane usage.
