Two games. Two final scores of 1-0.

One Union County team was a winner and heads to the state tournament finals.

For another local team, the final score was a heartbreaking end to a great season.

The Cobden High School softball team scored one run in its Class 1A super-sectional matchup with Cumberland Monday afternoon at Charlotte West Stadium on the campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The run was enough for a Cobden victory. With the win, the defending state champions return to the 1A finals, which are scheduled this Friday and Saturday in East Peoria.

The Anna-Jonesboro Lady Wildcats were ever so close to joining Cobden in East Peoria.

But A-J fell just short in a come-from-behind effort and was defeated 1-0 by Piasa Southwestern Monday afternoon in a Class 2A super-sectional championship game.

The 2A game was played at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Cobden continues defense of its Class 1A state championship with a game set for noon Friday against Dupo.

The game will be played at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria.

Other teams in the state finals are Downs Tri-Valley and either Dakota or Alexis United.

Dakota and Alexis United were scheduled to play late Wednesday afternoon for the championship of the Dakota super-sectional.

The Class 1A championship game is set for noon Saturday. The third-place game is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Cobden's games will be aired on WIBH radio in Anna.

Reception planned

A reception for the Cobden softball team is planned at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The reception will be in the Cobden High School gymnasium and is open to the community.
