Friends of Stinson celebrate 10th anniversary

A Union County organization celebrated its achievements and looked forward to a bright future during a 10th anniversary celebration last Saturday afternoon in Anna.

The special occasion was hosted by the Friends of Stinson Library District Inc. The celebration took place at the landmark Stinson Memorial Library in Anna.

The Friends of Stinson Library District organization was formed in the fall of 2001. The group was formed to build community support for the library, its programs and services.

The not-for-profit group continues to support the library while also backing new programs, projects and services.

The Friends of Stinson Library District also took time Saturday to honor  its founder and to recognize five community members as Patrons of Literacy. The  celebration was attended by about 40 people.

The Friends of Stinson Library District had their first board meeting in November 2001.

Since its inception, the group has supported the library with a wide range of programs and activities, including used book sales, providing books for children and helping the library.

Current Friends board president Jackie Beatty recognized those who have served, and continue to serve, the group.

"We are greatly indebted to all present and former board members," Beatty said.

Friends board member Sandy Davis recalled the achievements of the group over the past 10 years and looked forward to future successes.

"Our main goal is to help this library and to put books in the hands of children," Davis said.

Davis noted the success of the Book in Every Home project which is spearheaded by library staff member Kay Schaefer. The project, supported by the Friends, has given books to more than 5,000 children over the past 10 years.

Anna resident Gladys Freeze was honored for her role in the founding of the Friends of Stinson Library District 10 years ago.

Friends board president Beatty presented Freeze with a plaque. Wording on the plaque praised Freeze for "her vision, passion and commitment" to the library.

Five community members were honored as Patrons of Literacy in recognition of their "continuing generous support of library programs in Union County."

The Patrons of Literacy have been made honorary life members of the Friends of Stinson Library District.

Patrons of Literacy recognized at the celebration included Union County business persons Bill Cunningham, Rusty Flamm, and Pat and Bill Jackson, as well as Geof Skinner, who is the editor of The Gazette-Democrat.

Friends board member John Watkins thanked each of the Patrons of Literacy for their strong support of the library.

Friends board member Susan Hase honored those who are lifetime members of the group.

Friends board member Watkins also reported that work is underway to have the library earn recognition as a National Historic Landmark. The library already is on the National Register of Historic Places.
