Charlene Halstead

Charlene Halstead, 80, of Linton, Ind., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, at Good Samaritan Society Home in Jasonville, Ind.

She was born in Cairo on June 22, 1943, the daughter of William Theodore and Juanita Boyd Berbling. 

She was afflicted with polio at 1 year of age and persevered throughout her life to practice her profession of elementary teacher. 

She was a graduate of Cairo High School, Southern Illinois University and Indiana State University, with additional studies at Indiana University. 

She touched the lives of many children throughout her 33 years of teaching. 

She was a devoted wife of 56 years, mother and grandmother. 

She always had a positive outlook on life. She loved to read and spend time with her family. Throughout her time in Greene County, Ind., she was active as a Pink Lady at Greene County Hospital, volunteered at the Greene County Foundation and the Indiana Forestry Educational Foundation and was active in the Tri Kappa Gamma Tau Chapter and the Greene County Retired Teachers Association. 

She and her family were especially thankful to the staff of Greene County Hospital, Good Samaritan Society Home and Southern Care Hospice for their compassionate care during her final weeks. 

Charlene is survived by her husband of 56 years, Harry E. Pete Halstead of Linton; daughter Megan (Andrea) Halstead; grandchildren Brayden Stremming, Braylen Perkins and Adelia Perkins; and siblings Sherry Gibson, Bernadine Roberts and Marcena Berbling. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Nelson Berbling and Theodore “Teddy” Berbling. 

Private services were observed by the family. 

Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton, Ind., was in charge of arrangements. 

Memorials can be made to the Linton, Ind., Public Library or, for those out of town, to their local public library.
