Claude Eugene ‘Gene’ Davis
Claude Eugene “Gene” Davis, 89, died on Monday, Nov. 19, 2018.
Mr. Davis was born on May 21, 1929, near Pomona, the son of James Davis and Mamie Forby Davis and was the youngest of five children.
He was a veteran, serving as mess sergeant at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in 1959. He attended Dutch Ridge Church for several years.
After graduating from Southern Illinois University, he worked as a mechanic for Wallace Chevrolet for seven years and Vic Koenig Chevrolet for six years.
In 1972, he started an auto repair shop, known as Davis Auto Center in Makanda, that has served the community for over 46 years.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Davis of Makanda; son Kerry and wife Junita Davis of Makanda; son Glenn Davis and wife Claire Davis of Crystal Lake; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Joshua and Jessi Davis, Judah, Jonah and Jillian of West Frankfort, Jonathan and Sarah Davis, Caden, Natalie, Addison and Liam of Marion, Jacob and Miquelie Davis, Sophia and Olivia of Herrin, and MiCaela (Davis) and Max Grzelak of New Zealand.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale, with Pastor Gary Darnell officiating. Burial, with military rites, followed at Lipe Cemetery in Makanda.
