Dennis Ray Hess
Dennis Ray Hess, 70, of Buncombe, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2021, at Carbondale Memorial Hospital.
He was born on June 18, 1951, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Stanley and Beulah Pitchford Hess.
He married Debra Birkhead Hess on June 16, 2007.
He graduated from Carterville High School in 1969. After high school, he attended John A. Logan College and received his degree in electronic technology.
He worked for over 30 years in the coal mine industry, and retired from Local 318 Operators Union.
Mr. Hess was of the Christian faith and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
He loved spending time riding his motorcycle, fishing, hunting and mostly enjoyed spending time with his family.
All who knew him knew his favorite past time was his unforgettable story telling. While he will be sadly missed, he will live on in the hearts of all who loved him and fondly remembered for all of his countless acts of loving generosity.
Survivors include his wife, Debra Kay Birkhead Hess; five children, Todd (Fawn) Hess of Colorado, Amanda (Ryan) Filson of Anna, Ryan Hess of Florida, Rebecca Kohler of Anna and Lottie (Mark) Smith of Anna; several grandchildren Bryon Hess, Lauren Hess, Austin Filson, Garrett Filson, Kinley Hess, Mina Hess, Jeffrey Campbell, Emma Kohler, Jaida Smith and Kaylee Smith; three great-grandchildren, Aidan Hess, Braxton Hess and Colson Hess; six siblings, Stan (Derinda) Hess of Linden, Tenn., James (Shannon) Hess of Thompsonville, Brenda (Walter) Hill of Bonnie, Karen (Frankie) Chamness of Sesser, Gayla (Richard) McDaniel of Mattoon and Lisa (Ronnie) Boston of Eldorado; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, David Hess and Steven Hess; and two sisters, Judith Throgmorton and Patricia Boston.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Crain Funeral Home in Anna-Jonesboro.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will immediately follow the funeral service in McGinnis Cemetery in Anna.
