Doris Jean Isom Goins

Doris Jean Isom Goins, 94, of Perks, died at 2:32 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at the Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.

She was born on April 24, 1929, in Perks, the daughter of Lillian and Frank Christian Isom.

Doris and Louis Goins were united in marriage on June 10, 1947.

Doris Goins was known as The Queen of Perks. Her love for her family and her love for the Lord meant she was the matriarch of her family. 

Her faith began as she started attending Maple Grove Baptist Church at the age of 16. 

Doris loved to cook and to spend time with her family. She always enjoyed her grandkids’ ball games and hardly ever missed one. 

Her career began as a cook at the school in Perks. After the school closed she started being a caregiver/nanny. She later worked at Touch of Nature as a cook and retired from cooking at the Southern 7 Head Start in Ullin.

She is survived by her son, Gary Goins of Perks; grandchildren Gary Goins II (Karen) of Pulaski, Gayla Jones (Dennis) of Grand Chain and Laurie Duckworth of Grand Chain; great-grandchildren Bryan (Jackalyn) Cravens of Pulaski, Gary Goins III (Becky) of Texas City, Texas, Aaron Jones of Grand Chain and Nathan Austin of Perks; great-great-grandchildren Jacey and Jackson Cravens and Emilia Goins; special grandkids Miranda Ramage and Arissa McClellan of Grand Chain; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lillian Christian Isom, Baby Goins, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services honoring the life of Doris Jean Isom Goins were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Wilson Funeral Home in Karnak. The Rev. John Earnhart officiated.

Interment followed at the Masonic Cemetery in Cypress.

Pallbearers were Gary Goins II, Danny Goins, Dennis Jones, Daniel Kees, Mike Lentz, Butch Lentz and Jeff Lentz. 

Honorary pallbearers were Bryan Cravens, Aaron Jones, Gary Goins III and Jackson Cravens. 

Memorials can be made to the Maple Grove Baptist Church, 2883 Long Reach Rd., Ullin, Ill. 62992.

The family thanked the Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Southern Illinois Hospice for their wonderful care of Doris.
