Emmett Michael Phillips

Emmett Michael Phillips, 75, of Mounds, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2022, at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in Cape Girardeau.

Mr. Phillips was born on Nov. 21, 1946, in Cairo, the son of Emmett Mitchell and Juanita Smothers Phillips.

He served in the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy he was on the USS Constellation during the Vietnam War. 

Mr. Phillips retired after 32 years from Illinois State Police as a telecommunicator. 

He was a lifelong member of the Cairo VFW, a former member of the Cairo Elks Lodge and he attended Southern Grace Methodist Church in Mounds.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James Brown; and a sister, Shari Shepherd.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jackie Sue Phillips of Mounds; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Anna Phillips of Cape Girardeau; grandchildren Quinn, Spencer, Jackson, Conrad, Henry, Frank and Sam; one great-grandchild; other relatives and friends.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 17, at Mound City National Cemetery in Mound City. Pastor Doug Atkins will officiate. 

Interment to follow. Full military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Navy burial team and area veterans.

Memorials can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Mound City National Preservation Committee.
