Franklin Delano ‘Barney’ Porterfield
Franklin Delano “Barney” Porterfield, 84, of Dongola, died at 4:37 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at Union County Hospital in Anna.
He was born on March 12, 1933, in Dongola, the son of Clarence Lowell and Bessie Elizabeth Lawrence Porterfield.
He married Jodene McCommons on March 6, 1955.
He was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 581 of Dongola. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 2910 of Dongola, the VFW Post No. 3455 of Anna and Eastern Star Egyptian Chapter No. 30. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dongola for over 42 years and served as a trustee.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran. He retired from the State of Illinois. He served as a precinct committeeman of Dongola and a Union County Democratic chairman for over 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Jodene of Dongola; a daughter, Jan Porterfield of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Leon (Barbara) Porterfield of Dongola; special children Kyle and Cynthia Kern of Dongola; special grandchildren Erica (Jacob) Poat and Gracen Kern, both of Dongola; special great-grandchildren Carson and Aubrey Jo Poat, both of Dongola; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ronnie Joe Porterfield and Darrell Porterfield; and a sister, Carimena Capps.
Masonic rites were held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola, with the Rev. Paul Sadler officiating. Interment was in Christian Chapel Cemetery, with military honors by the Illinois honor guard.
