(Iola) LaVerne Mowery Anderson

(Iola) LaVerne Mowery Anderson, 90, of Fulton, Mo., and formerly of Tamms, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at Kingdom Care Senior Living in Fulton.

She was born on Dec. 15, 1931, at her grandparents’ home in Ullin, the only daughter of Verno E. and Iola Mae Keller Mowery.  

She was a dedicated member of Cross Road United Methodist Church in Ullin. She grew up in Beech Grove church, returned there in 1964 and was a member there until Beech Grove merged with another church to become Cross Road. She served as a Sunday School teacher and was the MYF sponsor.

She walked to Dexter School as a child and lived with an aunt and uncle during the week to attend Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.  She graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1952.

She was active in 4-H for over six years, won several trips to the state fair and represented Illinois at the National 4-H Club Congress in 1950.

She was an educator in the Century School District for over 30 years. She was a second grade teacher at Grand Chain and later was the district librarian.   She ended her educational career in pre-kindergarten.  She was also the Beta Club sponsor for many years.

She loved to travel. She was an avid reader and loved genealogy and history, particularly the Civil War.  

She grew up on the Mowery family farm near Tamms, returned to it in 1964 with her children and lived there until 2014, when she moved to Fulton to be closer to her son David’s family.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie (Jim) May; her two sons, David (Marie) Anderson and Doug (Kendra) Anderson; grandchildren Jennifer (Brad) Meyerhoff, Carla (Shan) McElroy, Kelly Edreich, Danielle (Taylor) Davidson, Monica Anderson, Laura Morgan and Brian May; great-grandchildren Brennan, Carter and Maddox Meyerhoff, Olivia and Ramona McElroy, Logan and Gavin Edreich, Lily and Alice Davidson and Jackson Morgan; nieces Lynne (Donald) Taylor, Joyce Mowery Crews and Barbara (Randy) Cain; and cousins and other relatives who were dear to her heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Danny Anderson in 1966; and two brothers, Welden (Kathryn) and Dale (Suella) Mowery.

A service honoring the life of LaVerne Mowery Anderson was held Aug. 6 at Cross Road United Methodist Church at 4 p.m., with Pete Vinson officiating.  Inurnment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation preceded the service at 3 p.m.  

Memorials can be made to Cross Road United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Crain Funeral Home in Tamms is in charge of arrangements.
