Joan Reichert Myers
Joan Reichert Myers, 93, formerly of Grand Chain, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas.
She was born on Aug. 15, 1928, the daughter of Robert Emil Reichert and Mary Elizabeth Johnson Reichert.
She graduated from Southern Illinois University.
In 1951, she married James Emery Myers, a U.S. Air Force fighter/test pilot. They spent their early married years stationed in Chaumont, France, and were able to travel in Europe before they returned to their station at Eglin AFB, Fla., in 1956.
Joan’s love of family defined her as a loving daughter, sister, wife and as an exceptional mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband (1965); and a brother ,James Robert “Gus” Reichert of Grand Chain (1996).
She is survived by her three daughters, Carol Myers Martz (Jim), Mary Constance “Connie” Myers and Carla Myers Polizzi (Rick); grandchildren James David “Jamie” Martz (Jessica), Caitlin Emery Martz Streams (Ryan), Sullivan Avery Martz, Hannah Emery Polizzi and Bryce Marie Polizzi; and her great-grandchildren, Maxwell Frederick Streams and Mia Anne Martz.
She is also survived by her sister, Mary Adelaide Frieb and niece, Deborah Ann Frieb of Chicago; and her loving family in Grand Chain, including sister-in-law Mary Joann McCluskey Reichert (Gus); her nephew, Robert Allen “Bobby” Reichert (Jo Ellen); her nieces, Lisa Ann Reichert Miller (Roger), Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Reichert Darden (James) of Cypress and Jane Ellen Reichert Cassibry (BT) of Paducah.
Joan was a dedicated Air Force wife and mother for many years before starting her lifelong career as an educator of elementary and high school students in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. She was honored to be nominated and awarded as Florida’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1972.
After retirement, she moved to San Antonio in 1991, where she enjoyed many years being an active volunteer for numerous organizations.
She will be sincerely missed by all who knew and loved her and were the recipients of her sweet smile.
She will be buried alongside her husband and loved ones who passed before her in St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Grand Chain at a later date.
