Mary Ann Steinhouse Simpson
Mary Ann Steinhouse Simpson, 93, of Carlinville, and formerly of Cairo, died at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023, at the Carlinville Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
She was born on Feb. 25, 1930, in Cairo, the daughter of Edwin and Ruby Roberts Steinhouse.
She married her high school sweetheart, John F. Simpson, on July 23, 1951, in Cairo.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, John F. Simpson, on Jan. 13, 2018; her father, Edwin L. Steinhouse, on Aug. 8, 1968; and her mother, Ruby Roberts Steinhouse, on Dec. 19, 1978,
She is survived by her four sons, Kenneth (Sylvia) of St. Louis, Richard (Kelda) of Rockville, Md., J. Scott (Erin) of Cedar Lake, Ind., and formerly of Carlinville, and Franklin (Amy) of Carbondale; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She attended St. Patrick’s Church Parish School and completed her education at Cairo High School in 1947. She worked as an office clerk.
In 1952, John was activated into service, and they lived together in Santa Maria, Calif., and then Fort Lewis, Wash. They returned to Cairo and John joined his father as pharmacist at Simpson’s Drug Store.
In addition to raising four boys, Mrs. Simpson helped to manage the drug store, and was also active in her church.
She was devoted to civic duty in Cairo, as president of the St. Joseph School Board and the Cairo Chamber of Commerce and other organizations.
She was an excellent quilter and seamstress, often sewing dresses for the many square dances she and John attended. She also enjoyed tennis, gardening and traveling.
A Mass and graveside service will be held in the fall and her ashes will be buried in Calvary Cemetery in Villa Ridge.
