Richard Arthur Howell
Richard A. Howell, 84, of Glenview, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2018, at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview.
He was born on April 14, 1934, in Chicago, the son of Harry A. and Alice Hunter Howell.
He married Mary Sullivan on Aug. 13, 1955, in Carthage.
Mr. Howell is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Howell of Glenbrook; one brother, Ronald (Nancy) Howell of Meridian, Idaho; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan. He was heard to say “I’m not leaving until they win the pennant...” and so he did. He was a strict disciplinarian due to his military school and educational background, but a gentleman first and foremost.
Richard and Mary traveled to every continent across the world. As a history teacher he wanted to see where history happened.
He and Mary never had children of their own but as an uncle, principal and teacher he touched many lives. The most recent being his young neighbor, Paul, to whom he became a mentor and a surrogate grandfather.
He was an avid follower of current events, reading the Chicago Tribune daily. He enjoyed discussing and investing in the stock market.
Graveside funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, today, at the Anna Cemetery, with John Nimmo officiating. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association or to the National Kidney Foundation.
