Walter J. Menees
Walter J. Menees, 92, of Anna, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.
He was born on June 5, 1926, in Anna, the son of Ola Edgar and Margaret Lily Shepard Menees.
He married Velma Ruth Parker on Sept. 25, 1947, in Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death on Jan. 13, 2007.
He is survived by his daughter, Deanna (Carmen “Corkey”) Romeo of Beaver, Pa.; a son, Terry (Jodi) Menees of Tempe, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Shamain (Jae) Romeo-Hallett, Maria (Aaron) Browning and Nathaniel Walter Menees; four great-grandchildren, Liam Hallett, Chiara Hallett, Karinna Browning and Dean Browning; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma Ruth Menees; a brother, Lloyd Perry Menees; a sister, June Menees Meyer; a brother, Malcolm Menees; and a sister, Juanita Menees Lynn.
Mr. Menees served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked as a manager at Kroger in Anna for 34 years before his retirement. After his retirement, he raised cattle and worked at preserving his family farm for future generations.
Walter and Velma loved to travel and spend time outdoors. Walter was instrumental in helping build the addition at the First Christian Church in Anna at the church’s original location.
Funeral services for Walter J. Menees were at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro, with Steve Sheperd and Bill Littrell officiating.
Interment was in the Anna City Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of the VFW of Anna and the Illinois Army National Guard military honor team.
