I had originally intended to entertain you this week with tales of time travel. I figured you probably wouldn't want to hear about journeys to the Carboniferous period, which was a long, long, long time ago, or the 1800s, which were just a long time ago. Maybe next time.

Instead, bear with me as I recount the latest adventures encountered on a couple of weekend walkabouts. Honestly, I hope you folks don't get bored with such tales. But the way I figure it, there have been entire books written by people who walked somewhere. Reading this jibberish once a week involves a much shorter commitment of your time than reading a whole, entire book.

When I go for a walk, I generally set out with, well, no idea whatsoever where I might be headed. I would not have been much help on the Santa Maria. Or the Nina or Pinta for that matter. It should be noted that I usually take a camera with me. I do not know if Columbus had a camera. If he did take pictures, the images have been lost by the passage of time.

Last Saturday afternoon, while heading in a somewhat northerly direction, I happened to spot a squirrel cavorting near a robin. The robin didn't seem to be very concerned with the escapades of the squirrel. Neither the bird nor the furry creature seemed all that much concerned with my presence.

As I often do, I just started shooting pictures of the critters. Little did I know, but I had captured the image of Super Squirrel which accompanies this week's waste of your time.

Sunday afternoon, I hit the pavement once again. How could I not? The weather was wonderful. Especially compared to the conditions which prevailed on a jaunt which I took one afternoon back in early March.

At one point during Sunday's walk, I happened to notice an unfamiliar sound coming from a wooded area off to my right. Initially, I thought I might be hearing some sort of bird. Then, I thought it might be a squirrel. Maybe I actually was hearing a flying squirrel.

I paused. And watched. In a moment or two, I spotted the creature which was making the sound. You get to see one of the images I captured.

I watched for a few minutes as the little animal walked back and forth, making some very pitiful sounds. I'm guessing that it was looking for mom. And, to be honest with you, I started to look for mom, too.

You see, I figured mom probably had very sharp teeth. And, I also figured that mom might not be very happy with another big, ugly creature getting close to one of her young 'uns. I took some pictures, and moved on.

I supposed that unexpected critter escapades and sightings are a couple of the reasons I enjoy my walks. I honestly have no idea what I might come across when I set out. Maybe someday I'll have enough good stuff for a book.

One last thing this week. Something I just wanted to share from a book I've been reading titled "what if?" The book, written by Randall Munroe, is subtitled "Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions."

I hope that Mr. Munroe doesn't mind if I share one of the fascinating little gems in his rather fascinating book: "In the state of Pennsylvania, drivers may see $2 added to their speeding ticket for every mile per hour by which they break the speed limit.

"Therefore, if you drove a car over a Philadelphia speed bump at 90 percent of the speed of light, in addition to destroying the city. . .

. . .you could expect a speeding ticket of $1.14 billion."

By the way, the book is available at Stinson Memorial Library in Anna. I planned to take it back Wednesday.

Look...up in the sky...or maybe just a couple of inches off of the ground...it's a bird...well, yes, there is a bird...it's a plane...nope, no airplanes...it's Super Squirrel...able to leap tall robins in a single bound...
