Reception honors longtime assessor

After nearly 40 years of service, a longtime Union County officeholder has retired.
Union County supervisor of assessments Robert "Gene" Plott officially retired May 31. Plott's last day on the job was Friday, May 29.
In honor of his many years of service, a reception in Plott's honor was held Friday afternoon.
The reception took place in the first-floor courtroom at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.
Plott started work on Nov. 16, 1970. During his tenure, he served for 38 years and six and a half months.
Friday's reception gave coworkers and friends an opportunity to wish Plott well in retirement.
The Union County Board of Commissioners presented Plott with a plaque.
The plaque, which was cut in the shape of Union County, recognized Plott of his years of "dedicated service."
When Plott began work, he had two small offices in the county courthouse.
From 1977 to 1993, the supervisor of assessments' office was in a new facility at the courthouse. The office has since been renovated and is home to the courtroom where last Friday's reception was held.
The assessor's office then moved several more times and its now located in a building across the street from the courthouse.
During Friday's reception, Plott was asked if he is ready for retirement.
"Absolutely. You bet," he said with a smile.
Plott said he was ready for a break, but still will miss the people he's worked with.
During retirement, Plott said he plans to work on his farm near Anna.
Plott said he was very grateful for those who came to Friday's retirement reception.
"I appreciate all of the support I've had over the years," he added.
