Roadside safety checks planned during December

Illinois State Police District 22 troopers plan to conduct roadside safety checks during December.

Capt. Harry Masse, commander of District 22, said federally funded programs will enable troopers and local police officers to be hired for overtime details.

District 22 has its headquarters at Ullin. Union County and six other area counties are in the district.

The safety checks will encompass all of District 22, Masse said.

"Roadside safety checks enable us to show the community that we are diligent in our law enforcement efforts," Masse said in a news release.

"We hope the public will comply with the laws voluntarily," he said.

"As the colder weather arrives and the holiday season approaches, we hope that people will continue to observe the driving under the influence laws and use a designated driver if needed," Masse said.

The roadside safety checks are funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.
