Shawnee girls win Meridian tourney

Taylor Ellis scored 15 points to lead Shawnee to a 43-35 win over host Meridian to win the Lady Bobcat Classic high school girls’ basketball tournament Saturday, Nov. 19.

“It was a little closer than I thought it would be,” Shawnee coach Chad Pitts said. “They made a run on us, but we hung in there.”

It was the first time Shawnee has claimed the title.

Shawnee built a 15-5 first quarter lead and was ahead 22-16 at the half. The Lady Centurions pulled to 34-26 going into the final period.

Jordan Johnson added 12 points for the Lady Reds. Reagan Brown had 6 points, Kaylee Boston 5, Morganne Kennedy 3 and Taylor Loveless 2.

“We played pretty well,” Pitts said. “It was a good win for us.”

Shawnee’s Boston was named the most valuable player of the tournament.

Teammates Johnson, Ellis and Kennedy were each named to the all-tournament team.

The Lady Reds finished in second place last year in the Classic, which was won by Cobden. It was the first second-place finish for Shawnee in the Classic.

Century 57, Dongola 29: The Lady Centurions built a first quarter lead on  their way to the third place championship over the Lady Demons Saturday, Nov. 20.

Century led 13-8 after one quarter and 28-14 at the half.

Haley Fuller had 10 points to lead Dongola. Emily Terbrak added 8 points, Michaela Penrod 7, Victoria Shirkey 4 and Ashlyn Schultz 2.

The Lady Demons’ Terbrak was named to the all-tournament team.

Kayla Eddington had 22 points to lead the Lady Centurions.

Meridian 31, Dongola 24: Fuller had 9 points to lead Dongola in the tournament loss Thursday, Nov. 18.

Terbrak added 7 points for the Lady Demons, Brittany Hinkle 6 and Jodi Schultz 2.

Meridian led 3-2 after one quarter. Dongola pulled ahead 10-8 at the half and was ahead 18-17 going into the final period. The Lady Bobcats came on for a 14-6 run in the final frame to pull out the win.

Dongola is 1-2 overall.

Shawnee 44, Century 29: Boston had 12 points to lead Shawnee in the second-round win in the Classic Thursday, Nov. 18.

Johnson added 8 points, Ellis, Brown and Kennedy 6 apiece and Loveless, Haley Murphy and Bethany McMahan 2 each.

The Lady Reds led 12-3 after one quarter and 26-12 at the half. Shawnee led 38-19 at the end of three periods.

Shawnee, 3-0, is scheduled to play again at Meridian Monday, Nov. 29.
