Suspect in custody after high-speed chase Friday

A Carbondale woman faces multiple charges after she was taken into custody following a high-speed chase which ended in Union County Friday night, June 12.

The suspect was identified in an Anna Police Department report as Betty A. Logan, 20, of Carbondale.

Logan was cited for charges which include driving under the influence of drugs, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, attempted involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide of an unborn child and criminal damage to state-supported property.

The police department report showed that the incident began to unfold at 10:02 p.m. Friday.

Anna Police Officer Daric Smith was on patrol on U.S. Highway 146 when he received a radio report about a vehicle possibly being driven by an intoxicated individual. The vehicle was reported to be traveling south on U.S. Highway 51.

Smith to went Highway 51, where he spotted the vehicle, a passenger car, near Limekiln Road. He clocked  the car traveling at 74 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone.

Smith turned on his squad car’s emergency lights and siren and then attempted to stop the car. The driver continued to drive away at a speed of 80 mph.

The driver continued south on Highway 51, allegedly running a stop sign and almost hitting another motorist.

Smith maanged to get beside the vehicle on Highway 51 at Sadler Road. The driver swerved into the side of Smith’s car. Smith then rammed the side of the car and forced it off the road.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, was taken into custody. She was transported to the emergency room at Union County Hospital in Anna for treatment.

The vehicle the woman was driving allegedly was stolen in Carbondale. The vehicle was impounded.

The suspect was transported to the Tri-County Detention Center in Ullin.
