Mary Magdaline (Mag) Barnes Thurston

Mary Magdaline “Mag” Barnes Thurston, 89, of Pulaski, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at Jonesboro Rehab and Health Care Center in Jonesboro.

Mrs. Thurston was born on Jan. 25, 1920, in Elva, Ky., the daughter of Bill Barnes and Ivy Stephens Barnes.

Mrs. Thurston was a member of the Pulaski Christian Church. She was a homemaker.

On Nov. 10, 1943, she married W.H. (Bill) Thurston, who preceded her in death on April 30, 1987.

Herrin defeats A-J in sectional action

Tyler Gooden and Kyle Hudson combined on a one-hitter to lead Herrin to a 5-2 win over Anna-Jonesboro in the Class 2A high school baseball sectional championship at Harrisburg Saturday, May 30.

Cody Wheaton was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the lone Wildcat hit. Cody Livesay added an RBI.

The Wildcats scored in the final inning after a lead off walk to Brady Wright, who scored on an error. Wheaton reached base on a Tiger throwing error for the other run.

Luke Partridge was the losing pitcher, scattering 9 hits to go with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Area high school baseball players on summer teams

Several area high school baseball players are competing this summer with American Legion and traveling baseball teams.

The Cape Girardeau American Legion squad, which is coached by former Shawnee High School baseball standout Todd Pennington, has Anna-Jonesboro’s Adam Kelley and Shawnee’s Tyler Glidewell and Tyler Brant on its roster.

Murphysboro’s Legion squad has former A-J players Matt Hand, Cody Wheaton and Josh Flamm, Shawnee’s Ty McMahan and Cobden’s  Joe Davidson, Aaron Cerny and Steve Draper.

John ‘Jack’ Martin Haase Jr.

John “Jack” Martin Haase Jr., 84, of Anna, died at 5:25 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Jonesboro Healthcare Center in Jonesboro.

He was born on March 27, 1925, in Blue Island,  the son of John Martin and Cornelia Kloostermann Haase Sr. 

He married Ella Mae Bernhard on April 26, 1947, in Jonesboro.

Irene Morrison

Irene Morrison, 85, of Wetaug died at 12:31 a.m., Thursday, June 25, 2009, at her home.

She was born on December 22, 1923, in Wetaug to Stante and Minnie (Ramage) Goines.  She married James Morrison on November 17, 1946.  They have enjoyed 62 years together.

She was a member of the Wetaug Church of Christ.   She was a homemaker.

        A-J’s Edwards, Woodward earn All-South honors

        Two Anna-Jonesboro Community High School high school athletes have been named to the 2009 Southern Illinois Coaches Association All-South track team.

        J.R. Woodward and Sully Edwards from A-JCHS earned the postseason honors.

        Woodward, a junior, had a season-best 300-meter hurdle time of 40.5 and a best effort of   15.4 in the  110-meter hurdles.

        Edwards had a season-best discus toss of 151-6. The senior was Southern Illinois River-to-River conference and sectional discus champion.

        Both athletes advanced to the state track meet.

        Ruby G. Yates

        Ruby G. Yates, 98, of Cobden, died at 8:58 p.m. Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

        She was born on Feb. 15, 1911, in Cobden, the daughter of William and Lona Nicholson Garner.

        She married Wilburn W. Yates on Aug. 25, 1928. He preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1971.

        Maurice Furlow

        Maurice Furlow, 65, of Jonesboro, died at 12:10 a.m., Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at the Jonesboro Rehab & Health Care Center. He was born August 10, 1943, in Mulkeytown, the son of Donald and Viola Silkwood Furlow.

            Maurice is survived by one daughter; Sheila Patterson of Spencerville ,Ohio, two sons; Vince Furlow of Virginia Beach, Va., and Adam Furlow of Creal Springs, nine grand-children and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers; Evan and Roger Furlow.
