Maurice Furlow

Maurice Furlow, 65, of Jonesboro, died at 12:10 a.m., Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at the Jonesboro Rehab & Health Care Center. He was born August 10, 1943, in Mulkeytown, the son of Donald and Viola Silkwood Furlow.

    Maurice is survived by one daughter; Sheila Patterson of Spencerville ,Ohio, two sons; Vince Furlow of Virginia Beach, Va., and Adam Furlow of Creal Springs, nine grand-children and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers; Evan and Roger Furlow.

Virginia L. Brayfield

Virginia L. Brayfield, 87, of Jonesboro, died at 2:07 p.m. on June 8, 2009, at the Union County Nursing Home in Anna.

She was born on Dec. 15, 1921, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the daughter of John and Kathleen Treffts Chasteen.

She married William Dean Brayfield on May 17, 1940, in St. Louis.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Annie Dykes

Annie Dykes, 86, of Jonesboro, and formerly of Tamms, died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Jonesboro Health Care in Jonesboro.

She was born on Nov. 6, 1922, in Cairo, the daughter of George and Hattie McBride Johnson.

She married Jimmie Dykes on Jan. 31, 1967. He preceded her in death.

She lived for 45 years at H&S Care Center in Tamms.

Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park on Old Route 13 between Carbondale and Murphysboro.

Crain Funeral Home in Tamms is in charge of arrangements.

Don Boyd Jr.

Don Boyd Jr., 83, of Mt. Morris, Miss., died on May 26, 2009, at his home in Mt. Morris.

He was born on Dec. 25, 1925, in Union County, the son of Donald and Della Zwahlen Boyd of Dongola.

He graduated from Dongola High School in 1943.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1945.

After the war, he attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree.

He taught psychology and sociology at the General Motors Institute in Flint, Mich., from 1956 until his retirement in 1986.

The heat is on

the past week no doubt was rather abrupt, and a bit of a shock to our systems.

Nevertheless, it is summer time in Southern Illinois, and we all know what that means. It’s likely we can look forward to plenty more heat and lots of high humidity, two conditions which make summer in Southern Illinois so extra special.

The heat certainly is unpleasant, but it also will help gardens to grow. Home-grown tomatoes, if not already here, should be ready to pick at almost any time.

Thomas Wesley Cramner

Thomas Wesley Cramner, 77, of Olmsted, died at 8:48 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Cramner was born on May 21, 1932, in Delaplaine, Ark., the son of Francis D. Cramner and Elsie G. Watson Cramner.

Mr. Cramner was an Army veteran. He was a retired truck driver. He was a member of Boaz Pentecostal Church.

Mr. Cramner was preceded in death by his first wife, Ella Bernice Cramner on July 17, 1984.

Four area players on Cape Legion squad

Four Union County area high school athletes are playing this summer on the Cape Girardeau American Legion baseball squad.

Results from some of the Cape Girardeau team’s recent games follow:

Cape Giradeau 5, Paducah 0: Tyler Glidewell pitched the 6th and 7th inning and recorded 2 strikeouts in the win.

Brady James and Tyler Brant played 1st and 2nd base, respectively.

Cape Girardeau 11, Calvert City 0: James was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and scored 3 runs in the win.

Brant was 1-for-3 and scored 2 runs.

County commissioners hear progress reports

Progress reports on a variety of projects were heard Monday at a regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro

Action on two matters, a new county liquor ordinance and a court fee collection process, were delayed until next week when the board will reconvene on Monday.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler Edmonds gave board members a draft copy of the new ordinance which revises county laws regarding businesses which sell liquor.

Norbert J. Cerny

Norbert J. Cerny, 88, of Cobden, died at 10:25 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009, at City Care Center in Anna.

He was born on Sept. 14, 1920, in Cobden, the son of John M. and Elizabeth Bigler Cerny.

He married Betty Lee Nebughr on April 18, 1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cobden.
