Cobden opens softball season with two wins

The Cobden High School softball team opened its spring season with a 2-0 record.

Cobden recorded victories over Murphysboro and Zeigler-Royalton.

Following are game summaries:

Cobden 4, Murphysboro 1: DaCota Knop was 3-for-4 with a double to lead visiting Cobden to the win Friday, March 19.

Kristen Pender was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Taylor Orsburn was 2-for-4 with a  double. Kayla Quertermous and Taylor Wilkins were each 1-for-3 with an RBI apiece. Ana Duda was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Roberts honored

Larry D. Roberts of Marion, a representative of Modern Woodmen of America, has been named to Modern Woodmen’s 2009 President’s Cabinet.

Roberts is being recognized for high achievement in life insurance sales and for ranking among the organization’s top representatives nationwide.


        8th grade student registration set at A-J

        A meeting for graduating 8th grade students and their parents is scheduled Thursday, March 25, at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

        The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

        During the meeting, A-JCHS guidance counselor Carol Carter will describe the registration process and answer questions about the 9th grade course offerings at the school.

        Students from Anna Junior High, Jonesboro and Lick Creek schools will receive registration forms and information about class offerings at the meeting.

        Cobden board meets March 1

        A wide range of topics were on the agenda at last week’s regular meeting of the Cobden Village Board of Trustees.

        The meeting was Monday  night, March 1, at Cobden Village Hall.

        <strong>Village Logo Contest</strong>

        Rules and an entry form for a logo contest for the village were reviewed and accepted by the board.

        The contest is for the general public. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on May 14.

        The prize for the logo accepted by the village will be $100.

        Goreville defeats Shawnee 61-44

        Tyler Shadowens scored 16 points to lead Goreville to a 61-44 win over Shawnee in the Class 1A high school boys’ basketball regional tournament at Meridian Tuesday, Feb. 23.

        Tyler Davis scored 13 points to lead the Redskins. Tyler Brant added 11 points, Kyle Griggs 9, Kyle Stevens 4, Greg Smith 3, Adam Pennington  and Andrew Livesay 2 apiece.

        The Blackcats pulled ahead 19-5 after one quarter and  34-18 at the half.

        Shawnee finished its season at 8-19 overall.

        Juanita Walden Warren

        Juanita Walden Warren, 97, of Olive Branch, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

        Mrs. Warren was born on Oct. 22, 1912, in Alexander County, the daughter of Tony and Ellen Walden.

        She was of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker.

        She was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie Ray Warren, on May 15, 1993, and by a son, James H. Warren, on Dec. 18, 2003.

        Flood warning continues for rivers More than 2 inches of rain falls during past week

        Rain and cool temperatures highlighted Union County's weather during the past week.

        Rainfall for the week totalled more than 2 inches in Anna.

        The rain came as a flood warning continued along the Mississippi and Ohio rivers in Southern Illinois.

        The National Weather Service, NWS, forecast office in Paducah reported Tuesday that river levels in the area were continuing to rise. Crests are expected by Saturday morning.

        The Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau was at 36.0 feet at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Flood stage is 32.0 feet.

        Mildred Irene Menees

        Mildred Irene Menees, 91, of Anna, died at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Union County Hospital in Anna.

        She was born on April 11, 1918, in Union County, the daughter of Everett and Grace Bean Menees.
