Mildred Irene Menees

Mildred Irene Menees, 91, of Anna, died at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Union County Hospital in Anna.

She was born on April 11, 1918, in Union County, the daughter of Everett and Grace Bean Menees.

Young pitching staff key for A-J baseball

Several players return this spring from Anna-Jonesboro High School’s 2009 regional championship baseball squad.

“I’m optimistic and excited about the season,” A-J baseball head coach Jake Alley said. “We’ve got a good group of upper classmen. But it’s going to depend on our younger classmates on how well we do.”

The top returner from last season’s 14-16 squad is senior infielder Jordan Chamness, who was an all-conference and All-South selection last season.

Leslie Donna awarded scholarship

Leslie A. Donna of Anna has been awarded a Regents’ Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Donna will be a 2010 graduate of Anna-Jonesboro Community High School. She is the daughter of Brad and Kathy Donna of Anna.

The Regents’ Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who have achieved an ACT composite score of 28 or SAT score of 1240. Students must also have a high school grade point average of 3.5 or graduate in the top 10 percent of their class.

County finances continuing concern Commissioner to discuss issue at meeting Monday, March 22

Budget concerns again highlighted discussion at a regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The bleak status of county finances was on the agenda at a county board meeting held Monday afternoon. The meeting was at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

The impact of the State of Illinois' budget crisis on the county has been a matter of ongoing discussion at recent county board meetings.

This week, it was reported that the county had $12,460 in bills and only $10,000 in the general fund account.

Goreville defeats Cobden

Goreville built an early lead on its way to an 84-55 win over Cobden in the Class 1A high school boys’ regional basketball tournament at Meridian Thursday, Feb. 25.

The Blackcats were ahead 17-12 after one quarter and 34-22 at the half. Goreville led 58-40 after three periods.

Robby Lehr scored 32 points to lead the Appleknockers. Alex Sweitzer added 9 points, Bo Gearhart 8, Steve Draper 4 and R.J. Bridges 2.

Cobden closed its season with a 15-11 record.

Hunter safety course slated

An Illinois Department of Natural Resources hunter safety course is scheduled in Union County.

The course is scheduled Friday and Saturday, March 19-20, at the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Anna.

Class hours are from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Students must attend both days.

To register for the course, call 618-827-3555 (the Southern Illinois Electric Cooperative).

Five persons injured in accident

Five persons sustained minor injuries in a traffic accident which happened Tuesday morning in Anna.

Illinois State Police at Ullin reported that the accident happened at 8:31 a.m. Tuesday on Warren Street in front of Lincoln School.

A sport utility vehicle and a passenger car were involved in the accident.

The driver of the SUV was identified as Daric Smith, 34, of Anna. Smith was not hurt.

Charles E. Southard Jr.

Charles E. Southard Jr., 64, of Cape Girardeau, and formerly of Olive Branch, died at 6 a.m. Sunday, March 14, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

Mr. Southard was born on May 3, 1945, in Vincennes, Ind., the son of Charles E. Southard Sr. and Delores Barnett Southard.

He was a retired general laborer. He was a member of the Salvation Army in Cape Girardeau. He was an avid Indiana University basketball fan. He liked country-western and bluegrass music.
