Hunters harvest 68,037 deer

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, IDNR, reports that hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 68,037 deer during the opening weekend of the 2010 Illinois firearm deer season.

The opening weekend was Friday through Sunday, Nov. 19-21. 

The seven-day firearm season is scheduled to conclude Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 2-5.

Lewis Brothers Bakery History And Progress

Lewis Brothers’ Bakery established February 1, 1925, was located in a log building at the rear of the property on West Chestnut Street and owned by Harry Moss of Anna, who also owned the bakery equipment.

Cross of Peace successes celebrated

The successful restoration of a Southern Illinois landmark was celebrated at a Christmas Eve gathering at Bald Knob Mountain near Alto Pass.

The gathering took place at midday in the welcome center near the Cross of Peace, which is located at the peak of the highest point in Union County.

Between 40 and 50 people attended a brief worship service and press conference which was hosted by Bald Knob Cross of Peace Inc., the governing body which oversees the Union County landmark.

John L. “Jack” Starr

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family:">John L. “Jack” Starr, age 68 of Anna, died at 9:00 am, Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Union County Hospital in Anna.<span style=""> </span> He was born on April 19, 1942 in Galesburg, IL, the son of Marion S. and Eva (Boen) Starr.<span style=""> </span></span></strong></p>

Lady ‘Cats 65, Carterville 29

Jessi  Stone scored 22 points to power Anna-Jonesboro to a 65-29 win over host Carterville in high school girls’ basketball action Tuesday, Dec. 21.

Chandra Parr added 14 points for the Lady Wildcats. Destiny Dillow had 12 points, Brooke Chamness 8, Valerie Pender and Emma Basler 4 apiece and Kim Mixen 1.

A-J pulled ahead 10-6 after one quarter and 28-17 at the half. The Lady Wildcats were ahead 47-21 going into the final quarter.

The Lady Wildcats, 6-6, play in the Benton Invitational this week.

Cobden High School homecoming events planned in January

Planning continues for a special homecoming celebration Jan. 14-15, 2011, at Cobden High School.

All alumni and other Appleknocker supporters are invited to attend.

The celebration is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, with a basketball game featuring the Cobden Appleknockers and Egyptian.

Homecoming coronation will follow the basketball game.

Appleknocker wear and other items will be available for purchase.

A-J bowling team in action

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School bowling team competed Wednesday, Dec. 9, at Herrin and Thursday, Dec. 10, at Mt. Vernon.

At Herrin, the home team won both the boys’ and girls’ matches.

Herrin won the boys’ event by a score of 3,084-2,297 and the girls’ competition by a score of 2,577-1,740.

Mason Hayward was high scorer for the A-J boys with a 509. Chelsea Hicks led the girls with a 398.

At Mt. Vernon, the home team again was the winner in boys’ and girls’ competitions.

A-J wrestling team opens new season with victory

The Anna-Jonesboro High School wrestling team won nine events to open the 2010-11 season with a 50-30 victory over visiting West Frankfort Monday, Nov. 29.

The following are winning events for the Wildcats:

112 pounds: Andrew Adams won a technical fall over Mueller, 21-6.

119 pounds: Daniel Heath pinned Smith in :26.

140 pounds: Brad Cerney pinned N. Gardner in 5:07.

152 pounds: Chase Hargrave decisioned Bozic, 5-2.

160 pounds: Andrew McMahan pinned Gass in 4:35.

170 pounds: Logan Tripp pinned Leach in 3:15.

W.C. ‘Bill’ Meggs Jr.

W.C. ‘Bill’ Meggs Jr., 62, of McClure, died at 10:27 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Oct. 26, 1948, in Wynne, Ark., to William and Zella (Robertson) Meggs.

He married Diana Williams in Nov. 2005. She preceded him in death July 16, 2010.

Bill was a member of the Rock Springs Free Will Baptist Church of Thebes.
