Shawnee College sets auditions for musical

Auditions are planned for Shawnee Community College's 16th annual spring musical.

The auditions for "Hairspray" are planned from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10. Auditions are open to individuals 16 years of age and older.

Auditions will be in the educational center on the college's main campus near Ullin.

"Hairspray" is set in 1960s Baltimore and deals with issues such as integration, racism and discrimination.

Those who plan to attend the auditions will be asked to complete an audition form and to bring a facial photograph.

Cobden man indicted on heroin conspiracy charge

Stephen R. Wigginton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced Dec. 20 that Roberto Alaniz, also known as “Berto,” 26, of Cobden, had been indicted by a federal grand jury sitting in East St. Louis in a one-count superseding indictment charging him with conspiracy to distribute heroin.

The indictment was handed down Dec. 15.

The violation took place between December 2008 and May 17 of this year in Union and Jackson counties.

Jerod Schaefer completes Army basic, AIT training

U.S. Army PV2 Jerod S. Schaefer graduated from basic training on Sept. 16, 2010, and AIT training on Dec. 6, 2010, all at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Schaefer received training which consisted of basic  military training and advanced individual training, AIT.

During his basic training, Schaefer learned first aid skills, field training, physical fitness, map reading, tactics, basic rifle marksmanship, instruction in drill and ceremonies, and military customs and courtesies.

Larry E. McDuffee

McDuffee, age 71 of Anna died at 1:15pm Saturday December 4, 2010 in Union County Hospital in Anna.<span style=""> </span> Larry was born April 16, 1939 in Marble Hill Missouri the son of Perry E. and Flossie M. (Thompson) McDuffee.</span></strong></p>

Shawnee 38, Chester 25

The Shawnee High School girls’ basketball team remained undefeated with a 38-25 win over visiting Chester in non-conference action Tuesday, Dec. 7.

The Lady Yellowjackets built a 6-0 lead after one quarter. The Lady Reds fought back for a 14-14 tie  at the half. Shawnee led 29-24 going into the final period.

Kaylee Boston scored 13 points to lead Shawnee and scored her 1,000th career point.

Jordan Johnson added 10 points and Taylor Ellis, Morganne Kennedy and Reagan Brown scored 5 apiece.

Shawnee improved to 6-0.

A-J finishes second at Harrisburg Tourney

The Anna-Jonesboro High School boys’ basketball team closed out the week with a second place finish and a 3-1 record in the Harrisburg Tournament Saturday, Dec. 4.

The Wildcats had Cody Livesay, Brady Wright and Tylor Duckworth selected to the all-tournament team.

Results from tournament games follow:

A-J 55, Carmi-White County 44: With Wright and Travis Smith scoring back-to-back 3-pointers to lead the way,  the Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs 11-0 in overtime for the win in the final tournament game Saturday, Dec. 4.

Holiday programs set at area schools

Christmas holiday season programs are scheduled at Union County public schools.

Lick Creek School plans to present a Christmas program at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20.

Cobden Elementary School will host a program at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21.

A Cobden School District holiday band concert is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12.

Programs for Lincoln and Davie schools in Anna are planned Tuesday, Dec. 14. The programs will be at Anna Junior High School.

Local, local, local

The International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors ran an item in its November newsletter which caught our attention.

The item featured a headline which read, "Local, local, local back in vogue." Dave Bruha, owner/editor of the Consort Enterprise in Consort, Alberta, Canada, wrote the article.

In his article, Bruha wrote that the "business of news has come full circle – back to the roots of community."

"Local, local, local is back in vogue," Bruha shared. "People want to be connected to their 'home,' however they define it.

Larry E. McDuffee

Larry E. McDuffee, 71, of Anna, died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, in Union County Hospital in Anna.

Larry was born April 16, 1939, in Marble Hill, Mo., the son of Perry E. and Flossie M. (Thompson) McDuffee.

Survivors include one brother, Ed (Lori) McDuffee, Indianapolis, Ind.; one niece, Lucianna McDuffee; and one nephew, Bronson McDuffee; other relatives and friends.
