Paulie Glasco

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mr. Paulie Glasco, age 86 of Cobden, died at 10:14 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2012 at his home in rural Cobden. He was born January 19, 1926 in Jonesboro, the son of Lowell and Rosa Leggens Glasco. He married Stella Toler on November 12, 1948 in Cobden.</span></strong></p>

County board hears latest update on courthouse project

The latest update on construction of Union County's new courthouse was presented last Friday morning.

The update was given at Friday morning's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was at the community center in Jonesboro.

Courthouse construction project manager Mike Smith reported that since Feb. 17:

On level 1, the small, only remaining floor was poured.

Betty L. Post

  <strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mrs. Betty L. Post, age 77 of Jonesboro, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2012 at her home in Jonesboro. She was born January 8, 1935 in Jonesboro, the daughter of John H. and Mabel Williams Spurlock. She married Joe Post on November 16, 2002 in Wolf Lake. He preceded her in death on December 2, 2009.</span></strong>

Identity theft concern at tax time

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds is alerting the public regarding identity theft and tax refund fraud associated with April’s tax filing deadline.

Tax refund fraud commonly occurs when stolen identity information is used to file a tax return in the victim’s name and the thief then obtains the refund that would be due to the victim.

Tax refund fraud was reported last year in Union County. The state’s attorney’s office urges the public to protect identifying documents and information as the tax deadline approaches.

Daisy Troop honors Olive Whiting

Daisy Troop No. 8597 visited the Whiting residence in Anna on Monday, March 12. Monday was the 100th birthday of the Girl Scouts and the Daisy Troop recognized past Girl Scout leader Olive Whiting.

Mrs. Whiting who is 91 years old, started as a Girl Scout field secretary in Gary, Ind., in 1942 and 1943. Then she was a field secretary in Madison, Wis., from 1943 to 1945.

In 1951, Mrs. Whiting started one of the first Girl Scout troops in Union County as a Girl Scout leader in Dongola.

Nancy Louise Ryan

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mrs. Nancy Louise Ryan, age 83 of McClure, died at 11:55 a.m. Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She was born October 24, 2012 in Jonesboro, the daughter of Louie E. and Nona Redman Turner.</span></strong></p>

Gene Mull

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-size: 16pt;">Gene Mull, 84, of Anna, died on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri.</span></strong></p>

To residents of Union County and the surrounding area, for many years our nation's government, corporations and other organizations tell us what they want us to know and hear.

Those that do or try or tell us what's really going on are slandered, threatened, mocked, etc. As will I for voicing my and many other peoples opinions.

Sgt. Joshua A. Born

Sgt. Joshua A. Born, 25, of Niceville, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, while serving his country in Afghanistan.

He was born on Dec. 4, 1986, at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.

He married Megan Myrick on June 6, 2010.

He was a member of the 549th Military Police Company stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga.
