Choate Center celebration set to begin next week

Nearly a century and a half of service to the region will be celebrated starting next week.

The Clyde L. Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna plans to celebrate 140 years of service to the region and the people of Illinois during October.

The Choate Center was founded in 1869. Since that time, the center has offered care and treatment for mental illness, and a home and vocational training for the developmentally disabled.

A time for support, prayers

As our community tries to come to grips with Tuesday's horrific event in Anna, we take consolation in knowing that faith and the support of caring and concerned neighbors will help us make it through this tough time.

To our friends at the First Baptist Church in Anna, and especially to the victims and their families, we offer our prayers.

'Person of interest' in custody in investigation of beating of two women at Anna church

A "person of interest"  in an investigation into the brutal beating of two elderly women at a church in Anna is in police custody in Williamson County.

Willis E. Bates, 45, originally of Golconda, was taken into custody Monday in Marion by authorities there. It was reported that he was wanted on a warrant from Pope County.

Judith Annette Weible

Judith Annette Weible died on Oct. 2, 2009.

She was born in Jonesboro on Sept. 10, 1935, the daughter of Harry and “June” Renfro.

She married Lynn Navin on May 3, 1952, in Piggott, Ark., and lived in Illinois and California in subsequent years.

She married William Weible on Dc. 7, 1963, and lived in Southern California until her move to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., in 2003.

Bluegrass festival scheduled in Alto Pass

The third annual bluegrass music festival is planned in downtown Alto Pass during Union County ColorFest weekend.

The festival is set for Saturday, Oct. 10.

Music is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and conclude with a performance by various groups playing together. Several local bluegrass groups will be performing.

The bluegrass music festival is being sponsored by the Friends of the Cross organization.

Arts Center plans events

Shawnee Hills Arts Council announces the following events planned at the Anna Arts Center to celebrate the arts during Union County ColorFest:

Oct. 9, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., a Your Stage Extravaganza is planned in the old fire station garage with performances by musicians Eli Tellor and Blackberry Blossoms and many others, as well as an open mike. 

Oct. 10, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Artists Market and Pavilion on Washington Street behind the arts center and in the fire station.

Various artists will have booths  and “hands on” workshops for all ages.

New historical marker dedicated

More than 300 students from Jonesboro School were on hand last Friday morning for the dedication of a new Union County landmark.

The PAST organization of Union County sponsored a dedication ceremony for a new Walk Where Lincoln Walk Wayside Marker.

The new sign is located on the Jonesboro Square. Local history, including information Abraham Lincoln's visit to Union County in 1858, is featured on the sign.

Union County resident Duane Hileman was one of those who spoke at Friday morning's ceremony.

A-J slated to host Chester Friday night

The Chester High School football team will drop out of the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference after this season and move to the Black Diamond Conference.

Anna-Jonesboro will host the Yellowjackets this Friday.

“It’s their last year in the River-to-River Conference and they might want to go out with a bang,” A-J head football coach Brett Detering said. “Chester is a very good football team.”

Cobden to host Fall Festival Saturday

Classic cars, aprons and art will be featured this weekend in Cobden.

A Fall Festival is planned in downtown Cobden on Saturday, Oct. 3. A variety of activities are being planned.

A Cobden Cruise nonjudged car show sponsored by Southern Counties Autos Unlimited will be the main feature of the festival.

The event begins at noon and will continue into the evening. The show will be held in Cobden's downtown park.

There will be food, music, games and other activities. A charity consignment auction and poker run also are planned.

Fall Festival set in Jonesboro

Jonesboro School plans to host its annual Fall Festival Thursday, today.

Jonesboro PTO has partnered with Fazoli’s Italian Restaurant to cater the Fall Festival dinner. 

Students sold advanced tickets. A limited number of tickets can be purchased at the door. 

The meal includes spaghetti, breadsticks, side salad, dessert and drink.

The dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Carryout meals are available.
