Lincoln exhibit on display

A Lincoln-Douglas debate traveling exhibit is scheduled to be on display in Anna on Saturday, Oct. 31.

The exhibit can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Anne's Church, which is located along South Main Street.

The exhibit is from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield.

The 20-foot panoramic display features historic pictures, narratives and timelines leading to the Lincoln-Douglas debates, which were held in 1858 throughout Illinois.

A-J cross country team runs at regional

Jesse Webb finished in 21:50 to lead Anna-Jonesboro’s efforts in the Class A high school regional tournament at Southeastern Illinois College near Harrisburg Saturday, Oct. 25.

Forrest Palis was next for the Wildcats in 22:01, followed by Ryan Pulver 23:40; Dylan Tucker 23:50; Matt Meller 24:02; Chance Bartolomucci 26:07; and Bart Vancil 33:50.

Lauren Goins was the lone A-J runner in the girls regional. She finished in 25:10.

Alex Stevens of West Frankfort was the individual winner for the boys with a 22:10 finish.

Bluegrass festival scheduled in Alto Pass

The third annual bluegrass music festival is planned in downtown Alto Pass during Union County ColorFest weekend.

The festival is set for Saturday, Oct. 10.

Music is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and conclude with a performance by various groups playing together. Several local bluegrass groups will be performing.

The bluegrass music festival is being sponsored by the Friends of the Cross organization.

New historical marker dedicated

More than 300 students from Jonesboro School were on hand last Friday morning for the dedication of a new Union County landmark.

The PAST organization of Union County sponsored a dedication ceremony for a new Walk Where Lincoln Walk Wayside Marker.

The new sign is located on the Jonesboro Square. Local history, including information Abraham Lincoln's visit to Union County in 1858, is featured on the sign.

Union County resident Duane Hileman was one of those who spoke at Friday morning's ceremony.

Union County Hospital in Anna plansto host 2009 health fair on Oct. 9

Union County Hospital in Anna plans to sponsor a Wii Tournament during its annual Health Fair, which is scheduled Friday, Oct. 9. 

The competition is open to 6th through 12th grade students who are attending schools located in Union County.

Registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The competition will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with prizes being awarded at 2:30 p.m. In case of a tie, a drawing will be held.

A Wii console will be awarded for first place, and Dick’s Sporting Goods gift certificates for second and third place. 

Carl Edward McClellan

Carl Edward McClellan, 85, of Cape Girardeau and formerly of Pulaski, died at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion.

Mr. McClellan was born on Oct. 30, 1923, in Pulaski, the son of Gus and Essie Mize McClellan.

He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Pulaski. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 672 AF/AM of Cape Girardeau. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a retired farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a brother, Owen McClellan.

'Person of interest' in custody in investigation of beating of two women at Anna church

A "person of interest"  in an investigation into the brutal beating of two elderly women at a church in Anna is in police custody in Williamson County.

Willis E. Bates, 45, originally of Golconda, was taken into custody Monday in Marion by authorities there. It was reported that he was wanted on a warrant from Pope County.

Presbyterian Church plans ColorFest events

The First Evangelical Presbyterian Church is planning to have free activities for children and their families on ColorFest Saturday.

Activities will take place on the church's new parking lot along South Main Street in downtown Anna.

Hours are from 9 a.m. to noon.

Free hot dogs, drinks and sweet treats, an inflatable slide, pumpkin painting and face painting are planned.


        Jonesboro defeated at state tournament

        Jonesboro lost 8-3 to Lebanon in the Class M state junior high school baseball tournament Tuesday, Oct. 13.

        Tyler Vaughn was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the hitting attack.

        Robbie Farrow was 2-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBIs. Ryan Hileman was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Wade Haire and Lance Cole were each 1-for-4 with an RBI apiece.

        Vaughn was the losing pitcher with a three-hitter to  go with a walk and 8 strikeouts.

        Nashville 2, Jonesboro 0: Noal Fuller was 1-for-2 in the semifinal loss at Centralia Saturday, Oct. 10.

        Fall Festival set in Jonesboro

        Jonesboro School plans to host its annual Fall Festival Thursday, today.

        Jonesboro PTO has partnered with Fazoli’s Italian Restaurant to cater the Fall Festival dinner. 

        Students sold advanced tickets. A limited number of tickets can be purchased at the door. 

        The meal includes spaghetti, breadsticks, side salad, dessert and drink.

        The dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Carryout meals are available.
