James E. Coleson

James E. Coleson, 75, of East Prairie, Mo., formerly of Mounds, died at 1:36 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

He was born on Feb. 28, 1935, in Mounds, the son of Lloyd Edgar and Ruby Bell (Harp) Coleson.

He married Barbara S. Henderson. She survives him.

He was a member of the Olmsted Pentecostal Church. He was a truck driver and retired from John Dallings Trucking. He had also been a fishing guide on Horseshoe Lake. He had worked at the silica mine at Olive Branch.

Holiday art exhibit reception set in Cobden

anthill gallery and vintage curiosities, in conjunction with The Yellow Moon Cafe, plans to present the second annual “Off the Wall” holiday group artist exhibition in downtown Cobden.

The public is invited to attend an artist appreciation reception scheduled at both Cobden locations on Saturday, Nov. 20. 

Free refreshments will be served at anthill gallery from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This year’s exhibition represents nearly twice as many Southern Illinois artists as last year.

Lois V. Brasel

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family:"><span style="">     </span></span> Mrs. Lois V. Brasel, age 74 of Anna, died at 12:33 P.M. Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the Union County Hospital in Anna. She was born June 18, 1936 in Saratoga, the daughter of Louie and Gladys Haire Smith. She married Ray Brasel on January 1, 1954 at the Bethel Baptist Church in Cobden.</strong></p>

Kermett W. Ayers

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;"><strong><span style="">           </span> Mr. Kermett W. Ayers, 81, of Anna, died at 12:50 A.M., Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at his home.<span style="">  </span> He was born October 4,<span style=""> </span> 1929 in Tishomingo, MS the son of Willie Paul and Mary Hamilton Ayers.<span style=""> </span> He married Betty Joan Basler on July 3, 1952 in Cobden.</strong></p>

Laymen's breakfast set in Anna

The 84th interdenomi-national laymen's breakfast is planned Monday, Nov. 22, in Anna.

The breakfast will be at 7 a.m. at the Sunshine Inn Community Center.

A laymen's breakfast is held twice each year: on the Monday before Thanksgiving and on the Monday before Easter.

The breakfast brings together laymen from churches throughout the Union County area.

Voters approve 2 more on county board

Within a few years, Union County will have a five-member board of commissioners.

A referendum to increase the number of commissioners was approved by a wide margin in Tuesday's Union County general election.

The proposal passed by a margin of 4,059-2,279.

The county board currently is made up of three commissioners.

Passage of the referendum came as a surprise to many of those who were watching as results were tallied Tuesday night at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Christmas Bazaar slated to open Saturday in Cobden

The eighth annual Union County Historical and Genealogy Society Christmas Bazaar is scheduled to open Saturday, Nov. 20, in Cobden.

The bazaar will continue on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 26-27; Saturday, Dec. 4; and Saturday, Dec. 11.

Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The bazaar is held in the historic DuBois Building at 117 S. Appleknocker, next to the Union County Museum in downtown Cobden.

The bazaar once again will feature hundreds of new, gently used, upscale and collectible holiday related items and gifts.

A-J football players earn postseason honors

Eight members of the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team have been named to the 2010 Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division Conference team.

Wildcat first-team offensive selections were running back Taylor Fitzgerald and linemen Josiah Miller and Brett Turner.

First-team A-J defensive selections were linebacker Adam Bennett and back Brandon Cerney.

A-J’s second-team members on offense were lineman Jared Merriman and on defense back Dalton Baker and lineman Michael Dillman.
