Harvest Celebration held at area’s newest winery

Lincoln Heritage Winery, the area’s newest winery, opened Friday, Oct. 15, with their Harvest Celebration.

Located a half mile off old U.S. Route 51 on Kaolin Road, the winery is located at 772 Kaolin Rd., midway between Anna and Cobden.

Nine wines were available for tasting and complimentary appetizers were served at the celebration.

A crowd of over 70 people filled the tasting room and spilled out onto the patio overlooking the vineyard.

Kid's Fest scheduled

The Children's Medical Resource Network, CMRN, in Anna plans to sponsor Kid's Fest Saturday, Oct. 9, in Anna.

The event will take place at the Anna City Park.

Kid's Fest will feature the seventh annual wiener dog race and wiener dog fashion show.

Kid's Fest activities are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Friday, October 1, 2010 due to complications from Polycystic Kidney Disease at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis. She was born February 16, 1948 in Decatur, the daughter of Donald and Shirley Tolliver Mathias. She married Burrell Dewayne File on October 3, 1986 in Decatur; he preceded her in death on January 9, 2006.</strong></p>

Jonesboro scores win at tournament

Garrett Nadeau was 3-for-3 with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs to lead Jonesboro to a 5-4 win over Christopher in first-round action of the Class M state junior high school baseball Tournament at Pinckneyville Saturday, Oct. 2.

Dallas Marks was 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Wade Haire and Elliott Cross were each 1-for-3.

Zane DeWitt and Nadeau pitched in the win. DeWitt pitched 4 innings and allowed a hit to go with a walk and 4 strikeouts. Nadeau pitched 3 innings and allowed a hit to go with no walks and 2 strikeouts.

Union County Hospital hosts successful health fair

Union County Hospital held its annual community health fair on Friday, Oct. 8. The event, which was held on the hospital grounds in Anna, was well attended. Visitors experienced warmer than normal temperatures on the day of the event.

Several community businesses handed out information and provided raffle items. Hospital departments passed out health information and promotional items. 

Children’s activities included face painting, crafts and an inflatable slide and obstacle course.

Anna man faces charges following alleged abduction

A Union County man was facing charges in connection with an alleged abduction in which a local woman was stabbed with a knife.

The incident unfolded Monday night in Union and Alexander counties.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds said Wednesday morning that he was planning to file charges against Bradley Scott Schlenker, 37, of 965 Toll Gate Rd. in rural Anna.

Edmonds said Schlenker would be charged with multiple counts of aggravated kidnapping, which is a Class X felony.

Anna Council resignation tabled

Action on the resignation of an Anna City Council member was tabled this week.

The issue was on the agenda at the council's regular meeting, which was held Tuesday evening at Anna City Hall.

The council also heard concerns about pit bull dogs which were voiced by several residents of the city.

Last week, Cindy Swope announced that she was going to resign as a member of the city council.

Swope is serving her first, four-year term on the council. She is one of four city commissioners.

A-J overpowers Benton 56-22 to gain spot in 2010 playoffs

The Anna-Jonesboro High School football team had lost its three previous games largely in part due to  mistakes and fumbles.

But last Friday night, the Wildcats appeared to have apparently remedied some of those miscues on their way to an overpowering 56-22 victory over host Benton.

Both A-J and Benton faced must-win situations in the game in terms of their 2010 postseason hopes.

“Our kids played with a sense of urgency,” A-J head football coach Brett Detering said. “They played like it was their last game.”

JoAnn Crawford Kerr

JoAnn Crawford Kerr, 87, a former resident of rural Buncombe, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at 8:37 a.m. at Parkway Manor in Marion.

 Mrs. Kerr was born on Oct. 21, 1922, in the Eight Mile community near Carterville, the daughter of Charlie Clyde Crawford and Daisy Mary Stocks Crawford.

She attended Eight Mile Grade School, Carbondale High School and received her training and certification as a registered nurse from St.Louis City Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1945.
