A-J overpowers Benton 56-22 to gain spot in 2010 playoffs

The Anna-Jonesboro High School football team had lost its three previous games largely in part due to  mistakes and fumbles.

But last Friday night, the Wildcats appeared to have apparently remedied some of those miscues on their way to an overpowering 56-22 victory over host Benton.

Both A-J and Benton faced must-win situations in the game in terms of their 2010 postseason hopes.

“Our kids played with a sense of urgency,” A-J head football coach Brett Detering said. “They played like it was their last game.”

Jonesboro scores win at tournament

Garrett Nadeau was 3-for-3 with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs to lead Jonesboro to a 5-4 win over Christopher in first-round action of the Class M state junior high school baseball Tournament at Pinckneyville Saturday, Oct. 2.

Dallas Marks was 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Wade Haire and Elliott Cross were each 1-for-3.

Zane DeWitt and Nadeau pitched in the win. DeWitt pitched 4 innings and allowed a hit to go with a walk and 4 strikeouts. Nadeau pitched 3 innings and allowed a hit to go with no walks and 2 strikeouts.

Courthouse construction project bonds sold

Several updates about items related to the construction of a new courthouse were shared at this week's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was Monday afternoon at the Sunshine Inn Community Center in Anna.

The session was moved to the Anna location due to water problems which were being experienced at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Friday, October 1, 2010 due to complications from Polycystic Kidney Disease at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis. She was born February 16, 1948 in Decatur, the daughter of Donald and Shirley Tolliver Mathias. She married Burrell Dewayne File on October 3, 1986 in Decatur; he preceded her in death on January 9, 2006.</strong></p>

Pastor temporarily unfit to stand trial

A local pastor has been found to be temporarily unfit to stand trial in a case involving allegations of sexual abuse of a minor.

The Rev. Bill Vandergraph, 72, of Alto Pass, has been charged with one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child (a Class X felony) and two counts of aggavated criminal sexual abuse (both Class 2 felonies.)

He has remained on home confinement for most of the time since his arrest on July 14.

SEC baseball tournament underway

Shawnee and Century were scheduled to play in the semifinals of the South Egyptian Conference high school baseball tournament at Century Tuesday.

Both teams advanced from first-round action Saturday.

Shawnee advanced with a forfeit win over Dongola and Century with a 14-1 win over Egyptian. The Demons forfeited because of not being able to field a full team.

Goreville defeated Meridian 16-6 Monday to advance to the championship.

The winner between Shawnee-Century was scheduled to play Goreville for the championship Wednesday.

A-JCHS class of 1971 making plans for reunion in fall, 2011

Members of the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School class of 1971 are making plans for a reunion in the fall of 2011.

The reunion planning committee is meeting to begin initial plans for the event.

The committee is seeking addresses for the following class members:

Ginger Alsip, Virginia Armstrong, Vicki Arnold, Mildred Browning, Charles Byrnes, Betty Bush.

Charles Clark, Floyd Cook, Chris Cox, Frank Cunningham, Jack Elder, Gloria Erwin.

Patty Fisher, Ilene Gee, Cecile Haynes, Dennis Howard, Dee Joplin, Gloria Kelley.

Students from Union County schools named as members of regional band

Student musicians from Union County high schools have been named as members of a regional band.

The band is scheduled to perform Friday morning, Oct. 8, at a regional educators' institute.

The institute will be at Shawnee Community College near Ullin.

The event is sponsored by regional superintendent of schools Janet Ulrich.

The band is scheduled to perform at 8:15 a.m. Friday.

Each student will participate in an all-day workshop scheduled Thursday, today.

Buncombe man pleads guilty to meth conspiracy charge

Stephen R. Wigginton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, reports that on Thursday, Oct. 21, Dennis S. Yates, 53, of Buncombe, entered a plea of guilty in United States District Court in Benton to a one-count superseding indictment, charging conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.

The violation took place between January 2007 and April of this year in Union, Jackson and Williamson counties.
