Wildcats advance with 39-26 playoff win over Breese Central

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team jumped ahead early Saturday afternoon and forced top seeded and host Breese Central High School to rely on their passing game.

The No. 4 ranked Wildcats used that to their advantage to upset the Cougars 39-26 in second-round action of the Class 3A high school playoffs.

The Cougars had relied on both their passing and running attacks this season but fell behind early.

Don D. Greenley

Don D. Greenley, 85, of DeSoto, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

He was born in Cairo on Jan. 13, 1926, the son of Mell and Sadie Davis Greenley.

He married Ruth Elizabeth Bridges in 1946.

Mr. Greenley was a former asphalt foreman for over 25 years with E.T. Simonds Construction Company and had worked at several hunting clubs throughout Southern Illinois.

A-J’s Bittle earns coach of year honor

Former Anna-Jonesboro Community High School wrestling coach Rick Bittle was named the Southern Illinois Coaches Association Coach of the Year for the 2010-2011 season.

Bittle, who resigned his coaching duties at the end of last season, coached for six years and compiled a 78-53 record.

His team finished 20-3 last season which tied A-J for the Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division Conference title. It was A-J’s first conference title won in wrestling.

Maxine Mae Connelly

Maxine Mae Connelly, age 78, of Monroe, GA, died on November 21, 2011.

She was born in Mill Creek, IL on May 27, 1933 to the late Ivan Ford Miller and the late Clara Dillow Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Clemon William Connelly, and Daughter-In-Law, the late Rhonda Connelly.

Madison Jade “Maddie” Stone

Madison Jade “Maddie” Stone, 14, of Energy, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2011 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Jackson County, IL.

Maddie was a Freshman at Herrin High School and was a member of the Herrin Middle School Track Team.

She was a member of the Herrin Church of Christ in Herrin.

Maddie was born April 20, 1997 in Carbondale to Raymond Stone, Jr. and Nicole Renee (Lingle) Stone.

Good deeds appreciated

Members of the Union County Women in Business organization are voicing appreciation for a beautification project in downtown Anna.

Union County Women in Business are thanking "all those who have brought beauty and interest to the downtown area of Anna through the pink and purple petunias in the lovely planters.

"Much appreciation goes to Longshadow for donating the planters, the city for setting the planters, the Anna-Jo Garden Club providing and planting the flowers, and the city and the merchants for watering through the very hot summer.

Jeffery Dale Emrick

He was born December 15, 1952 in Centralia, the son of Ervin and Mildred Bittle Emrick.</span></strong></p>

Woman to coach boys' basketball team Shawnee High School names new coach

A woman is set to take over the head coaching duties for the boys' varsity basketball team at a Union County high school.

LaDonna Bachman will be coaching the boys' team at Shawnee High School at Wolf Lake. Bachman formerly served as head coach of the girls' team at the school.

"The board understands that I understand the game of basketball," Bachman said.

Bachman said she had wanted the boys' head coaching assignment for the last couple of years.

"I applied this year and I got it," she said.

Hileman has steller day as punter

Indiana State University’s Lucas Hileman had the longest punt of his collegiate career in the final game of the season Saturday, Nov. 19.

Indiana State hosted Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the game.

Hileman, who is the punter for the Sycamores, had a 64-yard punt in the game.

During a 35-28 loss to the Salukis, Hileman had 8 punts. He averaged 53.2 yards per punt.

He closed out his collegiate season with 33 punts for 1,408 yards. He averaged 42.7 yards per punt.

Former POWS honored at Veterans Day parade

Two former prisoners of war from Union County received special recognition during the Veterans Day parade in Anna on Friday, Nov. 11.

The parade route through Anna was lined with hundreds of people. Many of those present applauded as veterans passed by.

Gene Robinson and Kenneth Mueller, both World War II veterans, were given a place of honor in the the parade.

The parade was sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars  Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of Anna.
