Nicole Renee “Nikki” Charles

Nicole Renee “Nikki” Charles, 37, of Carbondale, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2011 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Jackson County, IL.

She was a member of the Church of Christ in Herrin.

Nikki was born November 7, 1974 in Cape Girardeau, MO to Rodney Eugene Lingle and Beverly Kay (Norville) Lingle Trexler.

Fatal accident occurs Monday near Jonesboro

A Southern Illinois woman sustained fatal injuries in a single-vehicle traffic accident which happened Monday morning, Nov. 14, in Union County.

The accident left one other person with major injuries.

Doris Howell, 67, of Grand Tower, was fatally injured in the accident.

Howell was a passenger in a car which was being driven by Gene Jobe, 69, of Cobden. Jobe sustained major injuries.

Union County Sheriff David Livesay said the accident happened at about 11 a.m. Monday on State Route 146, about 1 mile west of Jonesboro.

‘Off the Wall’ art exhibit set in Cobden

anthill gallery and vintage curiosities, in conjunction with The Yellow Moon Cafe, is presenting the third annual “Off the Wall” Holiday Group Artist Exhibition in downtown Cobden.

The public is invited to attend an artist appreciation reception at both Cobden locations on Saturday, Nov. 19. Free refreshments will be served at anthill gallery from 6 to 8 p.m.

This year’s Holiday Group Artist Exhibition represents more than 60 Southern Illinois artists.

Task force seizes illegal substances

Officers with the Southern Illinois Drug Task Force on Nov. 17 executed a search warrant at Brown Bag Video in McClure.

The search warrant was the result of a nine-month investigation by  the  task  force  into the sale of K-2, “bath salts” and other designer products containing illegal substances.

As a result of the search, officers seized  thousands of packets of these products. 

A subsequent search at the residence  of  an  employee of the video store resulted in the addition of over 1,000 additional packets being seized. 

Christmas dinner theatre set Dec. 2-3 at Anna Methodist Church

Christmas dinner theatre is scheduled to return to the United Methodist Church in Anna in early December.

Performances are set for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3, in the Family Life Center at the church.

A full, three-course meal, salad, entree and dessert will be served.

A play titled “The Universe Welcomes Jesus” will be staged each night.

Tickets are $10 each. Reservations can be made by calling Gayle Caraker at 833-2810. Seating each night is limited to 80 people.

Historical society holiday bazaar set

nion County starts Saturday, Nov. 19, when the Ninth Annual Union County Historical and Genealogy Society’s Christmas Bazaar opens at 8 a.m. 

The bazaar continues Nov. 25, 26, Dec. 3 and 10.  Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The bazaar is held in the historic DuBois Building at 117 S. Appleknocker next to the Union County Museum in Cobden. 

Once again hundreds of new, gently used, upscale and collectible holiday related items and gifts will be available for sale.

Wildcats travel to top seeded Breese Central Second round state playoff game Saturday afternoon

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team will face a successful and well balanced opponent this Saturday.

The Wildcats, 8-2, have advanced to the second round of the Class 3A playoffs and will travel to Breese Central, 9-1.

The game, which kicks off at 1:30  p.m., will be aired on WIBH radio in Anna. The game also can be heard online by visiting <a href="http://www.annanews.com">www.annanews.com</a>.

School hearing planned

Proposed reorganization of four Union County public school districts will be the focus of a rescheduled public hearing.

The rescheduled hearing is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

The hearing will take place in the courtroom on the second floor of the courthouse.

The reorganization proposal involves the Lick Creek, Anna, Jonesboro and Anna-Jonesboro Community High School districts.
