Veterans Day Friday, Nov. 11; parade in Anna

Veterans Day will be commemorated Friday, Nov. 11.

Parade Scheduled

Again this year, the observance will be highlighted by a Veterans Day parade in Anna.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Friday. The parade route will be through downtown Anna.

The parade is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 in Anna.

Closings Planned

Schools will be closed for the holiday, as will local financial institutions.

86th laymen's breakfast planned at Anna church

The 86th interdenom-inational laymen's breakfast is planned Monday morning, Nov. 21, in Anna.

The breakfast will be at 7 a.m. at the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

Laymen's breakfasts are held twice each year: one the Monday before Thanksgiving and on the Monday before Easter.

Laymen representing churches from throughout the Union County area participate in the breakfast.

The program for Monday's breakfast follows:

Dongola community Thanksgiving service planned Sunday night

A Dongola community Thanksgiving service is planned Sunday, Nov. 20.

The service will be at 6 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church near Dongola.

The service will open with a prelude by pianist Melissa Bound from St. John's Lutheran Church.

Song leader will be Kyle Kern from First Baptist Church. The opening hymn for the service will be "We Gather Together."

The program for the service follows:

Welcome and invocation by the host pastor, Jay Franklin, of Bethany Baptist Church.

Nellie Wilkins Knupp

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family: Shruti;">Nellie Wilkins Knupp, 96, died at 3:45 p.m., Monday, November 7, 2011, in the Union County Nursing Home in Anna.</span></p>

A-J’s Wright named all-state

Anna-Jonesboro Community High School’s Brady Wright has been named to the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association’s 2011 all-state team.

Wright, a versatile quarterback, led the Wildcats to the quarterfinals of the Illinois High School Association Class 3A football playoffs.

A-J fell to Mt. Carmel in the quarterfinals and finished the 2011 season with a 9-3 record.

Other area players who earned all-state honors were Benton quarterback Tyler Leffler and Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn running back Greg Jenkins.

Anna Council moves forward with plans for recycling program

The Anna City Council continues to move forward with plans to begin a recycling program in the Union County community.

The city council met in regular session Tuesday evening. The meeting was at Anna City Hall.

The agenda for Tuesday's meeting also included discussion about the future of Anna's water service and a local animal control program.

The city is working with CWI to begin a recycling program. The program is slated to begin in August 2012.

A-J golf team awards presented

Two members of the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ soccer team have received 2011 postseason honors.

Travis Smith was nominated for honorable mention all-section team honors.

Smith scored 31 goals and recorded 8 assists while helping the Wildcats to an 11-8 record for the season.

A-J player Mason Hayward was selected  to the 2011 Chicago Fire all-state all-academic second team.

Mason was selected for the honor from more than 130 nominations.
