Dorothy L. Thieke

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%; font-family: Cambria;">Mrs. Dorothy L. Thieke, age 45 of Jonesboro, died at 10:25 a.m. October 19, 2011 at her home in Jonesboro. She was born September 23, 1966 in East Prairie, Missouri, the daughter of Frankie Murray and Virginia Magee.</span></strong></p>

ColorFest brings many activities to Union County this week

The annual Union County ColorFest takes place throughout the county this weekend and will feature many events and activities.

Donald E. Merkley

Donald E. Merkley, 67, of Anna, died at 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at his home.

He was born on Jan. 16, 1944, in Evansville, Ind., the son of Vic and Selma Freidman Merkley.

He married Elizabeth Goetz on Dec. 27, 1976, in Jonesboro.

He served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam conflict from 1966 to 1968.

He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and then received his master’s degree in social work at the University of Washington.

Shawnee wins SEC baseball championship

Gavyn Ellet was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead the Shawnee High School baseball team to a 4-2 win over Century for the South Egyptian Conference tournament championship at Shawnee Community College near Ullin Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Adam Pennington was 2-for-3 with a triple. Gage Shelton was 2-for-3. Andrew Livesay and Brandon Pind were each 1-for-3. Aiden McMahan was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Gary Pind was 1-for-4.

McMahan was the winning pitcher with a three-hitter to go with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Georgia Halterman Neibauer

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-size: 16pt;">Georgia Halterman Neibauer, 99, of The Villages, FL, formerly of Anna and Paducah, died at 11:00PM on October 18, 2011 at The Village Homewood at Freedom Pointe.</span></strong></p>

Saturday variety show to spotlight area talent

The Southend StumpJumpers plan to present their 14th annual variety show Saturday night, Oct. 8.

The show will be performed in the auditorium at Anna-Jonesboro Community High School.

Proceeds will go to Union County Relay for Life.

A preshow performance by the country band Backdraft starts at 6:30 p.m.

This year, the performing group plans to reenact comedy from the 1950s and 1960s television show "Gunsmoke" with the likes of Marshal Matt Dillon, Miss Kitty, Chester and the hillbilly deputy Festus Hagen.

Edgar Henry

Edgar Henry, 94, of Anna, died at 6:35 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, at his home.

He was born on Jan. 20, 1917, in Johnson County.

Mr. Henry was raised by his grandparents, the late Nathan and Lucinda Henry.

He married Louise Moore in Jackson, Mo., on Jan. 12, 1939, and she survives.

He moved to Chicago shortly after he and Louise were married and worked as a street car conductor. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart.

Chester Dale Coder

<p style="line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-family: Cambria;">Mr. Chester Dale Coder, age 87 of Anna, died at 10:26 p.m. Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Marion. He was born December 26, 1925 in North Liberty, IN, the son of Sylvester and Ethel Coffman Coder. He married Karen L. Nelson on June 10, 1987 in Las Vegas, NV.</span></strong></p>

Dave Coleman

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0.4in 0.0001pt 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 16pt;">Dave Coleman, 79, of Ullin, formerly of Tamms, died at 1:15AM on Friday, October 07, 2011 at his residence at Cache Valley Apartments.</span></p>

Tax payment due Oct. 17

The second installment of Union County property taxes is due Monday, Oct. 17.

A total of 13,156 bills were mailed in July by the Union County treasurer's office.

Payments can be made at the county treasurer's office at the courthouse in Jonesboro and at local financial institutions.

The treasurer's office is scheduled to be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. The office is located on the first floor of the courthouse.
