James W. “Bill” Rutherford

James W. “Bill” Rutherford, 75, passed away 8:20 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at his residence with his family by side.

Bill was born May 1, 1934, in Bush to John R. and Pearl (Hester) Rutherford. He married Linda (Shelton) Rutherford Dec. 24, 1954, in Hurst. Together they shared 54 years of marriage.

Anna VFW post announces Veterans' Day parade winners

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 of Anna has announced winners from the 2009 Veterans’ Day parade.

The parade was Nov. 11 in Anna.

Winners in the various categories follow:

Senior marching band: Anna-Jonesboro Community High School, first. Cobden High School, second. Shawnee High School at Wolf Lake, third.

Junior marching band: Anna Junior High School, first. Cobden, second. Dongola, third.

School color guard: SIU ROTC, first.

Waterfowl reserve event planned Saturday

A “Wild Weekend” is planned at the Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge near Ullin.

Saturday, Nov. 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the refuge plans to showcase the Frank Bellrose Waterfowl Reserve.

The event is taking place in celebration of National Wildlife Refuge Week.

The Bellrose Reserve includes 1,000 acres of wetland habitat that provides a crucial resting and feeding area for thousands of migratory waterfowl and other birds.

The reserve normally is closed, but will be open for public viewing.

Firearm deer season set

Hunters in Union County and throughout Illinois will head to the field this week for the state’s most popular hunting season as the 2009 Illinois firearm deer season opens.

The first weekend of the season is Friday through Sunday, Nov. 20-22.  The firearm season will conclude on Dec. 3-6.

The weather outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the region calls for partly sunny to clear conditions, with high temperatures in the upper 50s.

'Christmas in Cobden' celebration scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 5

A new holiday season event is scheduled to make its debut this year in a Union County community.

"Christmas in Cobden" is planned Saturday, Dec. 5, in Cobden. A variety of seasonal activities are planned throughout the community.

The celebration is being sponsored by the Cobden Community and Business Association and the Village of Cobden.

Christmas bazaars featuring decorations, crafts and homemade items are planned at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parish hall and the Union County Museum's General Store.

Blood drives scheduled

The American Red Cross has scheduled two blood drives in Union County next week.

A blood drive is planned from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Dongola Unit School.

Another blood drive is planned from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Cobden High School.

Jonesboro girls open season

The Jonesboro School junior high girl’s basketball team split to open the season.

Following are game summaries:

Jonesboro 46, Cobden 19: Sarah Coleman had 12 points, 4 assists and 7 steals to lead visiting Jonesboro Monday, Nov. 2.

Katie Edwards had 11 points, 4 assists, 6 steals and 4 blocked shots. Cara Farris had 7 points. Courtney Kendrick had 2 assists  and 5 steals.

Sammi Brimm had 12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists to lead the Jonesboro junior varsity to a 28-10 win over Cobden.
